Ask the vet to take a needle sample to tell you what it is. In older pets it may be a benign tumour or it may be an aggressive cancer.Aggressive tumours are called malignant as they can spread locally or elsewhere in the body.

It may be just a fatty lump, especially in tubby pets. These are really benign fat tumours called  lipomas. Even old pets can benefit from surgery.
